Agartala, 15th May 2025: The Tripura Electricity Consumers Association staged a protest today in front of the headquarters of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), voicing strong opposition to the declining electricity services in the state. The association later submitted a deputation with their demands to the Managing Director of the corporation.
Protesters alleged that electricity services are deteriorating, placing an increasing financial burden on consumers. They particularly opposed the installation of smart meters and the implementation of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) tariffs. “These measures are unfair and are making it difficult for consumers to manage their expenses,” said a representative of the association.
The association outlined several key demands, including the immediate halt of smart meter installations and T&D tariff implementation. They also called for outsourced divisions of the power corporation to be brought back under the corporation’s direct control and urged the appointment of permanent meter readers and linemen. Additionally, they demanded the removal of extra charges such as minimum charge, fixed charge, service charge, and duty charge.
Other concerns raised by the protesters included the urgent need to renovate aging transmission lines, replace outdated transmitters, and address recurring issues such as load shedding, low voltage, and unannounced disruptions in power supply. They also urged the establishment of customer care units in every division and advocated for a 60% subsidy for consumers setting up off-grid solar plants under the ‘P. M. Surya’ scheme.
Following the protest, association representatives warned of escalating their agitation if their demands are not met. “We will continue to fight for the rights of consumers. If necessary, we will launch a larger movement in the coming days,” declared one protester.
The Tripura Electricity Consumers Association emphasized that their campaign aims to protect consumers from undue financial strain and ensure reliable electricity services for all.
