Agartala, 13th October 2025: The Tripura government is actively working towards the empowerment of women and Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), implementing several schemes aimed at their upliftment, stated Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The remarks came during the Block-Level observation of the 8th Poshan Maah and the distribution of sanction orders to persons with intellectual disabilities.
Minister Nath emphasized the importance of strengthening youths, farmers, and economically weaker sections for overall national development. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been tirelessly working for the welfare of all sections of society,” he said.
During the event, the Minister handed over sanction orders to 15 beneficiaries under Mohanpur Block. He added, “The slogan ‘Swasth Naari, Sashakt Parivar’ reflects the Prime Minister’s vision. Empowered, healthy, and educated women ensure the well-being and development of the family. Women are the foundation of every household, and now land and property are also being allotted in their name. Multiple government schemes are working to make women self-reliant and empowered.”
Highlighting the state’s social welfare efforts, the Minister informed that Tripura provides 35 types of social allowances, benefiting nearly 3.98 lakh people. “While three allowances are jointly funded by the Central and State Governments, the rest are funded by the State Government. The annual expenditure on these schemes has increased from Rs 310 crore before 2018 to Rs 830.6 crore today,” he said.
Special attention is being given to Divyangjan under the Chief Minister’s Scheme for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. The scheme supports over 60% of individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental illnesses, or cerebral palsy. From September 27, 2025, eligible beneficiaries will receive Rs 5,000 per month. In the first phase, 891 individuals will receive the payment directly in their bank accounts from October 2025, costing Rs 44.55 lakh. Plans are underway to extend the scheme to all eligible persons. Explaining the terminology, the Minister said, “‘Divya’ means divine and ‘Aang’ means limb. ‘Divyangjan’ signifies persons with divine body parts and replaces older terms like ‘Vikalang’ to ensure respect and dignity. The Government of India adopted this term in 2014 to promote inclusivity and change societal perceptions.”
