Agartala, 7th May 2026: Allegations of police refusing to register complaints continue to surface from victims and distressed families across the state. In a significant development, the Tripura High Court has sought a response from the state government over alleged illegal actions by the East Agartala Police Station in connection with a brutal assault case.
Advocate Purushottam Roy Barman informed that on April 4, miscreants allegedly entered the residence of Ratna Roy in Banamalipur and assaulted her son, Saikat Roy. When Ratna Roy and her husband attempted to protect their son, they too were reportedly attacked.
According to the allegations, the attackers forcibly took Saikat Roy to East Agartala Police Station, where he was allegedly assaulted again inside the police station premises. It has also been alleged that he suffered injuries to his private parts during the assault.
On April 6, Ratna Roy approached the East Agartala Women Police Station to lodge a complaint. However, police allegedly refused to register the case. The family later informed the Director General of Police and the district Superintendent of Police, but still failed to get the complaint officially registered.
Subsequently, Ratna Roy filed a writ petition before the Tripura High Court. The matter came up for hearing before a Division Bench comprising Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit.
During the hearing, the High Court observed that police acted unlawfully by failing to register a case despite receiving a complaint. The court directed the state government to submit an affidavit in response and fixed May 12 as the next date of hearing.
The High Court also instructed the Chief Judicial Magistrate of West Tripura district to immediately visit East Agartala Police Station and secure CCTV footage from April 4 to April 6. Following the court’s order, the CCTV recordings were collected and placed under custody on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, it has been alleged that construction work was underway at Ratna Roy’s residence and that Agartala Municipal Corporation employee Rabindranath Ghosh had stopped the work using a task force. He allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh from the family. The family claims that Saikat Roy was assaulted by Rabindranath Ghosh and his associates after they refused to pay the money.
