Agartala, 31st March 2026: Tripura’s Leader of Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, on Tuesday urged State Election Commissioner Manjor Kumar to intervene in what he described as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the TTAADC elections.
In a formal letter, Chaudhury requested that the transfer of funds by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) administration be halted until the election process concludes. He also called on both the state government and the ADC authorities, including Tipra Motha, to strictly adhere to the provisions outlined under the “Party in Power” guidelines of the Model Code of Conduct.
Chaudhury, who also serves as the CPI(M) state secretary, alleged that Tipra Motha—part of the ruling alliance—is misusing its administrative position within the ADC to gain electoral advantage. He claimed that public funds are being distributed in a manner that could influence voters, raising concerns about fairness in the ongoing election process.
Citing a media report, he pointed out that on March 17—the same day the State Election Commission announced the TTAADC poll schedule—the ADC administration approved over ₹30 lakh as medical assistance. The amount was reportedly distributed equally among 292 beneficiaries, each receiving ₹10,275. These beneficiaries were identified as newly resettled Reang refugees from selected villages in Kanchanpur, Damcherra, and Panisagar in North Tripura.
While acknowledging that medical aid is typically provided on humanitarian grounds and may be exempt from election restrictions, Chaudhury questioned the timing and uniform distribution of funds to a specific group from only a few villages. He alleged that such actions could amount to indirect voter inducement using public resources.
In his letter, he urged the Election Commission to immediately examine the matter, halt any ongoing fund transfers if still in process, and ensure strict compliance with election norms to maintain a level playing field.
The allegations have added to the political tensions in the state as preparations for the TTAADC elections continue.
