Agartala, 29th June 2026: The Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES), Government of Tripura, observed the 20th Statistics Day on Monday at Hall No.-1, Pragya Bhavan, Agartala, commemorating the 133rd birth anniversary of renowned statistician, planner and founder of the National Sample Survey, Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
The programme was organised with the theme “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data”, focusing on the importance of data standardisation, interoperability, data sharing and institutional collaboration for strengthening evidence-based governance and policymaking.
The event was attended by Planning (Statistics), Tribal Welfare and Handloom, Handicrafts & Sericulture Minister Bikash Debbarma as the Chief Guest. Ratan Biswas, IAS, Director of Census Operations, Government of India, attended as the Special Guest, while Devananda Reang, IAS, Director of the Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Government of Tripura, presided over the programme.
The programme featured the presentation of the SDG Monitoring Web Portal, developed by NIT Agartala in collaboration with DES, aimed at monitoring district-wise progress towards Sustainable Development Goals and supporting the vision of “Viksit Tripura” through data-driven planning.
A special presentation on Self-Enumeration for Census 2027 was also delivered by the Directorate of Census Operations. The Directorate further released the publication “Tripura At-a-Glance, 2025-26”, showcasing statistical reports and initiatives undertaken by the department.
During the programme, DES highlighted its achievements in official statistics, economic analysis and data-driven governance. The department had successfully completed the NSS 80th Round Surveys on Health, Telecom and Education and was conducting surveys including the Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS), Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) and Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).
The Directorate had also initiated preparatory activities for Census 2027, including House Listing Operations and Population Enumeration. It was also preparing for NSS 81st Round Surveys covering the All India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS), Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of Agricultural Households and Migration Survey from July 2026.
Officials stated that Tripura had witnessed economic progress in recent years, with Gross State Domestic Product increasing from Rs 70,633 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 89,682 crore (Advance Estimate) in 2024-25, while per capita income rose from Rs 1.54 lakh to Rs 1.93 lakh during the same period.
The observance concluded with emphasis on strengthening statistical awareness, promoting the use of administrative data and encouraging cooperation among government departments, academic institutions and stakeholders for sustainable and inclusive development.
