Tripura police seize 2.18 kg ganja; Assam’s former cop in custody

Date:

Agartala, 6th April 2026:   Police arrested a 61-year-old retired Assam Police employee for smuggling ganja (cannabis) during a routine vehicle search at the Churaibari Naka point last night. The suspect identified as Nadia Chowdhury was intercepted at approximately 8:30 PM while traveling on a Guwahati-bound passenger bus bearing registration number AS01JC-1499 originating from Agartala.

During the search operation, officers recovered four packets containing 2.18 kg of dry ganja (cannabis) hidden inside two bags. Chowdhury, a resident of Gandhigram, Agartala, was immediately taken into custody. According to Churaibari Police Station OC Debabrata Biswas, the arrest is part of an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking along the state border.

The accused has been charged under the NDPS Act and was produced before the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court on Monday. Authorities noted that smugglers are increasingly switching to smaller, ‘passenger-style’ shipments to evade high-level security.

Police are currently investigating the source of the contraband and looking for other members of the smuggling network.
