Agartala, 13th April 2025: Tensions flared at GB Hospital last night after the tragic death of Tapas Nama Das, an outsourced worker with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation. Das, who sustained critical injuries after falling from a height while working earlier this week, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
The news of his death triggered a wave of anger among his colleagues. They accused the private company responsible for employing Das of failing to support him adequately after the accident. “The company neither cooperated in providing medical treatment nor showed any responsibility in ensuring compensation for such incidents,” alleged one worker.
Speaking to media personnel here, a Power department employee voiced the growing frustration among workers. “Although our job involves high risks, our salaries remain very low. We travel to different locations, rent vehicles and yet it’s a struggle to make ends meet. And when tragedies like this happen, the corporation doesn’t stand with us. Today it’s Tapas, tomorrow it could be anyone. How can we work under such conditions without constant fear?” he asked.
This morning, workers began gathering in front of GB Hospital. Protests intensified when the body of Das was being taken to the morgue. Demonstrators blocked the road near the TSECL office and detained a recruiting agency official, who was reportedly assaulted by the angry crowd.
The protesters are demanding appropriate compensation for the deceased worker’s family, permanent employment opportunities for outsourced workers and an elaborate investigation into the incident. “We won’t stop until justice is served,” declared a protest leader at the site.
The situation remains tense, and a significant police force has been deployed at the TSECL office to prevent further escalation. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
