Agartala, 24th September 2024: In a scathing critique of the current administration, former Chief Minister and Politburo member Manik Sarkar condemned the law and order situation in Tripura calling it “a disgrace to civilization and a blow to democracy.” Speaking at a condolence meeting for late CPIM Central Committee General Secretary Sitaram Yechury at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here on Tuesday, Sarkar emphasized the urgent need for resistance against the ongoing crimes, particularly those against women.
“There is no law and order in Tripura. Crimes against women are a disgrace, a disgrace to civilization and a blow to democracy. It must be resisted. This cannot be allowed to continue,” Sarkar stated. He accused the government of indifference, noting that “no government is indifferent to all the incidents that have happened in the state in the last one to one and a half months.”
Sarkar criticized the ruling party for failing to condemn or protest any incidents, alleging that the government is attempting to establish a one-party dictatorship through election rigging. “The current government is trying to survive by rigging the elections to turn the elections into a farce by establishing a one-party dictatorship. But it is not permanent,” he asserted.
Highlighting the corruption within the administration, Sarkar pointed out that “no work is done in offices without money.” He cited an instance where an opposition party legislator accused an officer in the Chief Minister’s office of favoritism and corruption. “Where is that gentleman managing the chief minister’s office? He is giving contractors time all the time. Taking discounts from contractors. And the people of the party know it too,” Sarkar remarked.
Sarkar also addressed the disillusionment among a small section of the population with the current government, urging them to be freed from this delusion. He questioned the whereabouts of the Rs 564 crore package announced by the Chief Minister, especially in light of the recent severe floods. “Where is that money?” he asked, criticizing the inadequate relief efforts and the insufficient financial assistance provided to flood victims.
Accusing the BJP, RSS, and Viswa Hindu Parishad of inciting communal riots, Sarkar mentioned planned provocative activities in Ranirbazar and Gandacherra. “A certain section has brought down attacks on people’s homes,” he said, stressing the need for the government to address the basic needs of the people.
Sarkar concluded by calling for organized street movements to force the government to pay attention to the people’s needs. The memorial service was attended by CPIM leaders, including Prakash Karat and Jitendra Chaudhury, who paid tributes to Sitaram Yechury.
