Agartala, 1st November 2025: Allegations have surfaced against two jawans of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), tarnishing the reputation of a force long regarded as the pride of the state for its role in counter-insurgency operations. The accused identified as Shishu Babu and P. Chowdhury from the 1st Battalion camp in Barakathal, West Tripura are reportedly engaged in systematic extortion and abuse of power.
Local sources informed that the two jawans have been collecting weekly payments from sand depot owners and truck drivers Rs 1,000 from each depot and Rs 100 from each sand-laden vehicle. Those who refuse to comply are allegedly threatened with legal action or warned that operations in the area will be forcibly shut down.
The misconduct doesn’t end there. The duo has reportedly targeted illegal cannabis cultivators in the Sidhai police station area. They are accused of gathering personal details of growers and demanding Rs 6 per plant under the threat of police intervention, allegedly invoking the names of senior officials including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer and the Superintendent of Police of West Tripura.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, senior officials in the police administration appear unaware of the activities, raising concerns about oversight and accountability. Fear of retaliation has reportedly silenced many victims, though in recent days, several sand depot owners and truck drivers have come forward to lodge complaints with media personnel.
Locals believe the actions of these two jawans are not only illegal but also aimed at discrediting the TSR and the broader law enforcement apparatus. They are calling for immediate suspension and departmental inquiry against the accused.
