Agartala, 3rd March 2025: The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) jointly arrested two women drug peddlers from Agartala Railway Station last night. The police personnel have seized a total of 21.065 kg of dry cannabis (ganja) from their possession, which was concealed in two large handbags. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is over Rs 3 lakh.
Speaking to reporters here, GRP’s Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das said that the accused persons were planning to smuggle the cannabis to other states using the railway network. The Agartala Railway Station was reportedly being used as a transit point for the illegal trade.
Following the arrest, a case has been registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Agartala GRP police station. Officials suspect that more individuals may be involved in this smuggling operation, and further arrests are likely.
The arrested women have been identified as Sunita Devi (48), resident of Patna, Bihar, Rita Devi (35), resident of Vaishali, Bihar.
Both accused will be presented before the court tomorrow. Later Police officials have intensified surveillance at railway stations to prevent further drug smuggling activities. Authorities have urged passengers to report any suspicious activities to ensure a safer travel environment.
