Agartala, November 29: A 60-year-old man, Rajab Ali, died after being assaulted by a group of men in Udaipur Agriculture Chowmuhani on Tuesday evening. The incident sparked a protest by the locals, who blocked the Udaipur-Killa road on Wednesday morning and demanded justice for the victim.
According to the police, Rajab Ali was trying to stop a fight between Akter Hossain, an auto-rickshaw driver, and Subrata Saha, a resident of the area, when he was attacked by Subrata and his associates, Sanjoy Debnath, Balai Das and a woman. Rajab Ali was rushed to Gomti District Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Rajab Ali’s son filed a case against the four accused at Radhakishorpur police station under sections 325/302/34 of the Indian Penal Code. The police arrested Subrata, Sanjoy and Balai on Tuesday night, while the woman and another suspect, Biswajit Pal, are absconding.
The locals staged a road blockade on Wednesday morning, burning tyres and shouting slogans against the culprits. They also sought government assistance for the family of the deceased. A large police force was deployed to control the situation.
The local MLA, Rampad, visited the spot and appealed to the protesters to lift the blockade. He assured them that the police would arrest the remaining accused and take action against them. He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and said that the government was with them.
The Hajj Committee Chairman, Shahlam, also visited the house of Rajab Ali and offered his sympathy to the family.The road blockade was lifted after several hours, causing inconvenience to the commuters.
