Agartala, 26th July 2026: An undertrial prisoner died under mysterious circumstances at the Central Correctional Facility in Bishalgarh, triggering demands from his family for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Pranab Pal, a resident of Hail Mara area under Camp Bazar in the capital city. Around two months ago, he was arrested from Agartala Railway Station under the NDPS Act after alleged recovery of cough syrup from fish cartons. Since then, he had been lodged at the Bishalgarh Central Correctional Facility.
On Sunday morning, prison authorities informed Pranab Pal’s family over the phone that he had died and was being taken to AGMC and GBP Hospital. After receiving the news, his family members rushed to the hospital.
A relative of the deceased said that the family had met Pranab Pal inside the jail on Thursday and he appeared healthy and normal at that time. However, they were not informed about the circumstances leading to his death.
The family alleged that three jail personnel brought Pranab Pal’s body to GBP Hospital, where doctors reportedly informed them that he had died much before being brought to the hospital.
The family further claimed that there were inconsistencies in the statements given by jail personnel regarding the time and circumstances of his death. According to them, one person said he died during the night, another claimed it had happened recently, while another stated that he died on the way to the hospital.
Standing at the hospital morgue, Pranab Pal’s family members demanded a proper and neutral investigation to uncover the truth behind his death. They questioned how an inmate died inside the correctional facility and what events took place before his death.
The family urged the state government to ensure a transparent inquiry so that the actual circumstances surrounding Pranab Pal’s death come to light.
