Agartala, 26th September 2026 : The body of an unidentified man was recovered from a pond near the Laxmi Narayan Temple area in the capital city on Saturday, triggering tension among local residents.
Local residents reportedly spotted the body floating in the water of the Laxmi Narayan Bari pond and informed the police.
According to an eyewitness, the body was seen floating in the pond, following which the police were immediately alerted.
Police from East Agartala Police Station reached the spot and recovered the body from the pond. It was subsequently sent to GBP Hospital for post-mortem examination. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.
The incident has caused concern in the area, and police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Local residents have also alleged that the area around Anandamayi Kalibari Road, adjacent to the pond near Laxmi Narayan Temple, has allegedly become a hotspot for drug-related activities. They claimed that various types of intoxicating substances are allegedly sold in the area.
Residents further alleged that although beautification work has been carried out around the pond, security arrangements in the area remain inadequate.
Questions have also been raised over the delay in recovering the body. According to local accounts, the body reportedly remained floating in the pond for nearly two hours in the presence of police before it was finally recovered.
When members of the media repeatedly sought clarification from police officials regarding the delay, they reportedly declined to comment.
