Agartala, 13th February 2026: At an age when most people retire into quiet living, Narayan Baidya, the veteran journalist from Kathalia under Sonamura subdivision continues to pursue stories with his camera and pen. But his dedication to journalism recently led to a disturbing incident.
While recording footage of a left-wing protest near Kathalia market’s motor stand yesterday, Baidya was suddenly targeted by miscreants. The attackers attempted to snatch his mobile phone. Though they briefly succeeded, the presence of police nearby forced them to return the device. The assault temporarily disrupted Baidya’s professional duties and left him mentally shaken.
Despite his age, Baidya remains active, sending reports from Kathalia and surrounding areas to media outlets across Tripura. Speaking after the incident, he admitted feeling deeply distressed by the attack.
The matter quickly drew the attention of the Sonamura Press Club. An emergency meeting was convened, and on February 13 at 2 pm, a delegation of 12 members including Baidya himself, club secretary Abhijit Bardhan, vice-president Tapas Laskar, and senior member Naresh Das submitted a written complaint to Jatrapur Police Station OC Siti Kanta Bardhan.
Following a detailed discussion with subdivision journalists, the Press Club strongly condemned the incident. Secretary Abhijit Bardhan later briefed the media, emphasizing the urgent need for ensuring the safety of journalists in the region.
