Veteran tribal leader Nirajoy Tripura passes away at 99, tributes pour in

Agartala, 21st June 2026:   Veteran tribal leader, senior CPI(M) politician, and former MLA Nirajoy Tripura passed away late Saturday night at the age of 99 after battling age-related ailments for a prolonged period. His demise has cast a shadow of grief over the tribal community, CPI(M) circles, and political circles across Tripura.

Born on July 12, 1928, in a village in present-day Bangladesh, Nirajoy Tripura migrated to Tripura with his family after Partition. Despite facing financial struggles in his early years, he dedicated his life to social service and working for the welfare of the people.

He joined the communist movement in 1964 and gradually emerged as one of the most respected tribal leaders in the state. Throughout his political career, he raised his voice for indigenous rights, land issues, social justice, and the development of marginalized communities. He played an important role in strengthening grassroots movements during periods of major social and political change in Tripura.

Nirajoy Tripura was elected MLA from the Chaumanu constituency in 2008 and 2013. Known for his simple lifestyle, honesty, and commitment to public service, he earned respect beyond party lines.

CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chowdhury paid tribute, stating, “Nirajoy Tripura was a true son of this soil. His entire life was dedicated to struggle and the welfare of common people.”

As a mark of respect, CPI(M) offices across the state will fly party flags at half-mast. Political parties, social organizations, and leaders have expressed deep sorrow over his passing. His contribution to tribal rights and grassroots democracy will be remembered for generations.
