Agartala, 17th June 2025: A housewife from Dupirban Gram Panchayat in Dharmanagar continues to face injustice despite filing a complaint with the Dharmanagar Women’s Police Station. The incident took place on June 3 has raised concerns over the police’s handling of the case.
It is reported that Sakina Begum, wife of Qutubuddin from Ward No. 3 was allegedly harassed for months by Ashab Uddin, a nationalist leader from the same panchayat under the Jubarajnagar assembly constituency. The harassment escalated leading to a violent attack on Sakina Begum. On the evening of June 3, she was allegedly dragged into the house of Ashab Uddin, where she was physically assaulted. Shockingly, Ashab Uddin’s wife Hajiba Begum, a panchayat member also participated in the attack. The victim claims that her body, including private areas was sprayed with Naga pepper causing her to lose consciousness.
Local residents intervened and rushed Sakina Begum to North Tripura District Hospital at Dharmanagar. Following the incident, she filed a formal complaint against Ashab Uddin, Hajiba Begum and other family members with Dharmanagar Women’s Police Station. However, despite the severity of the allegations, no arrests have been made.
Speaking to the media personnel, Sakina Begum’s husband expressed frustration over the police’s inaction. “We are poor daily wage workers. We are struggling to survive, yet the police refuse to act on our complaint,” he said. The family alleges that the accused are being shielded due to their political influence.
Today, Sakina Begum, her husband and local residents approached the police station again seeking justice. However, they were informed that the in-charge Shipra Das was unavailable. Other officers reportedly stated that they could not proceed without her.
Concerns have been raised over the conduct of Shipra Das, with allegations that she selectively handles cases based on personal interests. “Where transactions are good, her efficiency is high,” claimed a local resident. Reports suggest that she has blocked phone numbers of media personnel and local leaders making it difficult to obtain information.
