Agartala, 8th December 2024: Tensions ran high in the Lunthaichara area of Pathalia Ghat Village, Jampuijla block, after Jamal Hossain who is reportedly an innocent youth, was arrested and charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
On Sunday, his mother, Parija Begum, alongside enraged villagers, gathered outside the Bishramganj police station, accusing the police of framing Jamal while shielding a notorious drug dealer.
Jamal’s neighbors, including Manju Begum, Abdul Kashem, Ahid Mia, and Ismatara Begum, defended him, stating that while Jamal struggled with addiction and often sold household items to fund his drug habit, he was not a drug peddler. They claimed he bought drugs, including heroin, from Rajib Dutta, a well-known dealer operating openly in Bishramganj market.
On the night of December 5, Jamal was reportedly arrested while attempting to purchase drugs from Dutta’s shop. By December 6, he was presented in court, and an NDPS case was registered against him. However, villagers allege a glaring injustice: despite a raid on Rajib Dutta’s four-story building, where police reportedly recovered drugs, no case was filed against him.
Locals, infuriated by the apparent double standards, demolished the restaurant in front of Dutta’s property during the raid. They claim the police turned a blind eye to Dutta’s activities after receiving large sums of money from him, choosing instead to scapegoat Jamal, an impoverished addict.
“Jamal is the son of this neighborhood. Yes, he struggles with addiction, but framing him while the real culprits roam free is unacceptable,” said an angry villager.
Parija Begum, Jamal’s mother, prayed for justice, stating, “Allah will not forgive those responsible for this injustice.” The villagers have demanded action against the Officer-in-Charge (OC) and second OC of Bishramganj police station, accusing them of corruption and shielding the powerful while persecuting the vulnerable.
