Agartala, 19th May 2025:  Vigilant villagers thwarted an attempted cattle theft while police reportedly arrived much later at the scene. The incident took place today at around 3:30 am along National Highway 08 near Sukanta Weaving Industry in Chechurimai Gram Panchayat under Bishramganj Police Station.

According to local sources, a group of thieves was moving along the highway with 12 cattle when villagers, awakened by the distressed cries of the animals, rushed out and confronted them. The gang abandoned the livestock and fled, leaving the villagers to secure the cattle.

Despite notifying Bishramganj Police Station immediately, officers arrived only after the situation had been contained. Meanwhile, the cattle were tied to a tree near the highway, with villagers standing guard throughout the night.

By morning, the owners Farid Mia and Gouranga Debnath, residents of Fakiramura, Uttar Charilam were informed about the rescue. They hurried to the scene, coordinated with the villagers and the police and safely reclaimed their animals.

Mia and Debnath expressed relief over the recovery of their livestock- 10 belonging to Mia and 2 to Debnath, stating that their cattle usually roam freely in the forests and return home after a day or two.

The villagers’ vigilance has once again proven to be a crucial defense against cattle theft in the area.
