Agartala, 19th May 2025:  A harrowing case of alleged abuse at a drug rehabilitation center has come to light in Udaipur subdivision, where a youth was reportedly beaten and later had to be rescued by his family in a critical condition. The family claims they were forced to pay Rs 10,000 to the center before they could express their desire to take him home.

The victim identified as Md Rakib (21), a resident of Karaimura under Bishalgarh police station had been struggling with drug addiction for several months. Seeking treatment, his family admitted him to the Serene and Sober Foundation Drug Rehabilitation Center at Tepania on May 15. However, within two days, his condition deteriorated drastically.

According to the family’s statement, Rakib bore visible injuries on his face, neck and legs and was unconscious for two days after being taken to Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital for treatment. His relatives alleged that he was subjected to inhuman physical torture and deprived of food during his stay at the center.

Further accusations suggest that when the family attempted to take Rakib home, the center authorities demanded Rs 10,000, warning that he would not be handed over without payment. Ultimately, the family had to forcibly rescue him and rush him to the hospital.

The Director of the rehabilitation center Prasenjit Banik has been named in the allegations. Rakib’s family has vowed to take legal action against the center citing gross misconduct and abuse.

Local authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Local people have expressed outrage, demanding an investigation into the alleged malpractice at rehabilitation centers.
