Agartala, 24th April 2025:  A string of thefts within just 48 hours has raised serious concerns about security in Khowai city, leaving residents on edge. The latest incident took place this afternoon at the residence of Apu Roy in Ward No. 8 of Lalchhara area under Khowai police station.

Reportedly, thieves took advantage of the unoccupied house between 12 noon and 1 pm, making away with gold ornaments and cash. The family returned home to find their belongings stolen, and the housewife overwhelmed by the loss broke down in tears while speaking to the media personnel. Neighbors expressed their distress and anger over the recurring crimes, which they believe highlight a larger issue of law and order.

A puzzling aspect of the incident is that a woman was present on the balcony during the theft, yet she reported hearing no sounds from inside the house. Despite visible damage to the property, no disturbances were noted, adding to the growing unease among the locals.

The latest theft follows two other incidents in quick succession—a burglary at a councilor’s residence just two days ago and another targeting a teacher couple in the BPC neighborhood. The frequency of such crimes has fueled resentment among Khowai’s residents, who question the efficacy of the local administration in curbing criminal activities.

“The thieves are mocking the administration now. If incidents like these continue, people will no longer feel secure in their own homes. Are we supposed to patrol our streets ourselves?” lamented a senior resident.

Criticism is mounting over the police’s perceived inaction, with some residents accusing authorities of being indifferent to the worsening crime situation. Concerned businessmen are reportedly considering implementing private security measures akin to older guard systems.

As fear and frustration grip Khowai, locals are demanding a concrete response from the administration. Will authorities step up and address security concerns before the situation spirals further? That remains the pressing question echoing through every alley of the city.
