𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗮, 𝟮𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 : In preparation for Durga Puja 2024, the West Tripura District Police and Civil Administration have enhanced security measures and issued a firm warning to all Puja organizers against collecting forceful donations.
At a press conference on Sunday, West Tripura District Superintendent of Police, Dr. Kiran Kumar, stated that the district hosted 889 Durga Pujas in 2023, with an estimated 900 expected this year. “We have received 248 applications so far. Comprehensive security arrangements are already in place, and we have organized a district-level meeting with West Tripura District Magistrate, Dr. Vishal Kumar, and club members this Wednesday. Sub-division meetings have been completed,” he said.
Dr. Kumar detailed the security setup, including 253 fixed pickets, 30 CCTV cameras, 60 police assistance booths, 30 watchtowers, and 25 drop gates. He added that last year, 1,300 Tripura State Rifles personnel were deployed, with a similar number expected this year. Additional police forces will also be mobilized. The SP highlighted two extortion cases involving the Udichi Club, resulting in strict action against the individuals involved. The club has been barred from organizing Durga Puja. “We have warned all club secretaries that forced collection of donations will not be tolerated, and we will take stern action,” he asserted.
Regarding law and order, Dr. Kumar reported a slight decline in crime registration compared to last year. Property-related offenses have significantly reduced, with 83 cases reported by September 2024, down from 108 in 2023, and 101 property offenders arrested. Additionally, the conviction rate for NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases has improved to 66.67% in 2024, compared to 33% the previous year. Crimes against women have also seen a nearly 50% reduction.
West Tripura District Magistrate, Dr. Vishal Kumar, reassured citizens that the administration is taking strict action against any organization found pressuring people for Puja donations. “Such groups will face strict consequences, including denial of permission to organize Durga Puja,” he emphasized.
