Agartala, 25th November 2024:  Locals in the Resham Bagan area of Agartala’s suburbs have raised allegations of widespread corruption in ongoing road works, sparking a protest that led to a complete road blockade. The demonstration caused significant traffic disruption leaving many passengers stranded and facing severe inconvenience.

According to the protesting residents, the road in Resham Bagan had suffered extensive damage due to recent floodwaters. Despite informing the administration multiple times, the quality of the current renovation work has left much to be desired. “The road construction is substandard. The black paint on the red soil comes off at a mere touch, and the red soil itself is exposed easily,” one local stated.

Protesters claim that corruption is rampant in the development process. “Development has become synonymous with corruption here. Contractors are looting government money by cutting corners in construction,” a protester remarked.

The local administration was criticized for not addressing the villagers’ concerns adequately. “We have been suffering for a long time, and it seems like nobody is listening to us. The road is likely to collapse within days of the renovation if this poor quality continues,” said another resident.

The protesters expressing their frustration in front of media personnel demanded immediate action and accountability from the authorities. They vowed to continue their protests until their grievances were addressed and proper road construction was ensured.

The blockade caused traffic to come to a standstill, affecting daily commuters and creating significant hardship. The protest highlighted the urgent need for transparency and improved oversight in public works to prevent such issues in the future.
