Agartala, 2nd July 2026: A 60-year-old widow from Chebri Binar Tila under Khowai subdivision has alleged that she has been subjected to continuous physical and mental abuse by her son and daughter-in-law for the past seven years, while claiming that the police failed to act despite her repeated appeals for help.
According to the allegations, Phulmati Debnath has been living alone since the death of her husband, Rabindra Debnath, seven years ago. She alleged that her son, Nepal Debnath, became involved in a relationship with a married woman from the locality after his father’s death, leading to tensions within the family and the community. Phulmati claimed that during this period, her son allegedly assaulted her and her daughters and has continued to harass her ever since.
The widow further alleged that her son and daughter-in-law are now attempting to forcibly evict her from her own residence. She said several arbitration meetings were convened by the local panchayat to resolve the dispute, but no settlement could be reached. The panchayat reportedly advised her to seek police intervention.
However, Phulmati alleged that when she approached the police station, officers informed her that they had no time to visit the spot and suggested that the matter be resolved through legal proceedings in court.
The incident has triggered concern among local residents and panchayat members, who have demanded appropriate action to ensure the widow’s safety and a fair investigation into her allegations.
