Agartala, 12th September 2025 : In a major medical achievement, doctors at the CTVS & IR Department of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital have successfully performed a complex heart valve replacement surgery on a 56-year-old woman from Jarulchhara area of Kumarghat, Unakoti district.
The patient, who had been suffering from a severe heart ailment for over 14 years, was first brought to the OPD on July 29. Despite undergoing treatment abroad, her aortic valve had become completely damaged due to calcium deposits and stone formation, leaving her heart unable to pump blood properly. Doctors had long advised valve replacement, but financial constraints delayed the surgery.
With her condition worsening — marked by severe breathing difficulty and inability to perform daily activities — the patient was admitted to AGMC’s CTVS & IR Department on August 21. CTVS surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya assured the family that the operation could be carried out free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
On August 25, a 10-member surgical team led by Dr. Bhattacharya successfully replaced the patient’s aortic valve with a tissue valve through open-heart surgery. The operation was supported by Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, Dr. Surjit Pal (Critical Care), Physician Assistant Sudipta Mondal, Perfusionist Sujan Saha, OT Assistants Ratan Mondal, Joydeep Chakraborty, Abhijit Roy, OT Nurses Mousumi Debnath, Annabahadur Jamatiya, Sourav Shil and Arpita Saha, along with staff member Sourav Tripura.Post-surgery, the patient responded well to treatment and was kept under ICU observation before being discharged on September 11. She has been advised weekly follow-ups at GBP Hospital.
The patient’s family expressed their gratitude to the medical team and the state government for extending full support to ensure the life-saving surgery.
