Agartala, 1st July 2024:   Tensions escalated as women’s group vehemently opposed the establishment of a liquor shop under the leadership of Shankar Sinha, a well-known figure in Sabroom market. The incident took place at a government residence in Binadhepa area of ward no.2 amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the proposed foreign liquor shop along the Agartala-Sabroom National Highway.

“The attempt to open such a liquor store has met with strong resistance from the local community,” stated a source familiar with the situation.

On Sunday evening, residents mobilized surrounding Shankar Sinha residence, where liquor stockpiles were reportedly being stored. The uproar prompted a swift response from Sabroom police, who arrived at the scene to diffuse the escalating tensions.

Local sentiments are running high against the establishment of the foreign liquor shop, authorized under the BJP-IPFT coalition government. “The villagers have made their stance clear: no votes will go to the BJP if this liquor shop is allowed to proceed,” affirmed a local source.
