Agartala, 19th July 2024:   Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi stated on Friday that his party would ensure Tripura, which has been experiencing violence over panchayat elections, does not turn into another Manipur.

Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, led a party delegation to the violence-affected areas of the state.

“The Congress firmly stands with its leaders, workers, and the people of Tripura during these challenging times. We will not succumb to the BJP’s terror tactics,” he said at a press conference at the party’s state headquarters in Agartala. “We will inform the party high command of what we witnessed in Tripura during our two-day visit. PM Narendra Modi claims that India is the mother of democracy, but what we saw here is nothing short of a murder of democracy,” he added.

Gogoi suggested that there might be a scheme to turn Tripura into a “second Manipur,” but assured that the Congress would not let that happen. “We will bring up the issue of violence, injustice, and the threat to democracy in Tripura in the upcoming Budget session of Parliament,” he said.

Senior Congress MP Tariq Anwar alleged that law and order had collapsed in Tripura.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman stated that at least 3,383 party candidates could not file their nominations for the panchayat polls due to the violence.

“We had informed the police in advance to provide security to our candidates for filing their nomination papers, but the police did not assist,” he alleged.
