Agartala, 1st August 2025 : At a time when both the central and state governments are rolling out initiatives aimed at empowering the youth economically, a young man from Kulai Sudhanshu Ghosh Para in Ambassa subdivision has emerged as a model of success.
Bittu Dey, leveraging government support through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, has established an ornamental fish hatchery right in his backyard and is now earning a sustainable livelihood.
Bittu began his journey in 2022, with financial assistance provided under the scheme. His hatchery, reportedly the only one of its kind in Dhalai district, now boasts a vibrant collection of 12 to 15 species, including Full Red Guppy, Full Black Guppy, Mix Guppy, and Albino Red Dragon Guppy. This year marked the start of his commercial sales.
“The ornamental fish sector presents a promising opportunity for youth to become financially independent. That is precisely why we’re supporting ventures like these,” said Gouranga Chandra Sarkar, Deputy Director of the Dhalai District Fisheries Department in an interview.
In a separate conversation, Bittu shared that the response has been overwhelming. “People from across the state are now visiting to purchase their preferred fish varieties. It’s been a great help for my family.”
Bittu’s hatchery stands as a testament to how government-backed entrepreneurship can foster self-reliance and local development one guppy at a time.
