With an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President J P Nadda on Thursday appointed Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh as the new President of the Uttar Pradesh unit.
National General Secretary Arun Singh issued a letter regarding the appointment of Bhupendra Singh, a member of the UP Legislative Council. He replaces Swatantra Dev Singh, who resigned after his tenure ended on July 19.
Bhupendra Singh, a Jat, is a cabinet minister in Yogi Adityanath government and holds the portfolio of Panchayati Raj Department.
Party sources said that by appointing Bhupendra Singh as the state president, the BJP has attempted to maintain a caste and regional balance within the organisation and the government.
Chief Minister Yogi and several Ministers hail from eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Bhupendra Singh rose in the ranks from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was earlier the regional President of the BJP in western UP. He is considered close to Yogi Adityanath.
