The Nobel Prize given to Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the current Interim Government in Bangladesh, should be revoked for his “support to jihadist-led genocide” in his country, Rama Dasa Ashram General Secretary Bhargava Raman demanded on Sunday.
The former General Secretary of Hindu Aikya Vedi in Kerala also demanded the prosecution of Yunus in an international court of justice or his role in “aiding and abetting crimes against humanity”.
“The persecution of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh has reached catastrophic levels, with innocent lives lost… due to unchecked religious violence,” he claimed.
“Muhammad Yunus, who was appointed by militant jihadi groups, has shamefully supported and justified these atrocities,” he said.
“Yunus’s blatant complicity and his refusal to condemn the violence against innocent Hindus are an affront to human rights and a direct betrayal of the values the Nobel Prize is meant to uphold. His actions are enabling and empowering those responsible for this horrific persecution,” said Raman.
He said the world cannot remain silent in the face of “such brutality” and must act now to stop the atrocities in Bangladesh by standing with the victims and demanding justice.
Yunus and Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006 for their work to “create economic and social development from below”, according to the official website of the Nobel Prize.
Yunus became the Chief Adviser to the Interim Government in Bangladesh on August 8, three days after then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country following a violent revolt that unseated her Awami League regime.
Since Hasina’s departure, the minorities in Bangladesh have complained of harassment and atrocities targeting them, accusations denied by the Bangladesh government.
A Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, who has actively campaigned for minority rights in Bangladesh, was arrested and jailed last month on sedition charges.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is also the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote. has been denied bail, triggering more tension and violence in the restive country.
