SC dismisses petition seeking recall of Tamil Nadu Governor

Date:

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a writ petition seeking the recall of Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi for walking out of the state legislative assembly without delivering the customary address.

Petitioner-in-person C R Jaya Sukin argued that the Governor’s action violated Constitutional norms and insulted the people of Tamil Nadu.

He urged the court to direct the President of India to recall the Governor, citing Article 156, which states that a Governor holds office at the pleasure of the President.

A bench, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, rejected the plea, stating that the prayers sought were beyond the court’s jurisdiction.

“We cannot grant that prayer, we are also bound by the Constitution. The petition is dismissed,” observed CJI Khanna.

The controversy arose after Governor Ravi walked out of the assembly, reportedly over the Tamil Nadu State anthem being played instead of the National Anthem during the session’s commencement. UNI SNG SSP
