Agartala, 7th July 2025: Mayor Dipak Majumdar today has strongly defended the state government’s decision to rename the Agartala Town Hall after Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, calling it a “well-deserved tribute” to a national leader who played a pivotal role in India’s development.
Addressing the criticism from opposition parties, Majumdar argued that naming public institutions after prominent personalities is a widely accepted practice across the country. “Such decisions have been made during the tenure of previous governments as well, including the opposition, when halls and institutions were named after their party leaders without much debate,” he said.
He alleged that the opposition’s objections stem not from the act of renaming itself, but from ideological differences. “They are protesting simply because the decision aligns with the vision of the current BJP-led government. Had it been someone from their own ideological fold, there would’ve been no protest,” Majumdar said.
Citing previous examples, the Mayor highlighted the renaming of Agartala airport after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, calling it a respectful nod to Tripura’s legacy. “Likewise, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s contributions to India’s nation-building are significant and deserve recognition. Honouring him is a matter of pride for the people of Tripura,” he said.
Taking a swipe at the earlier Left Front regime, Majumdar alleged that several public venues were renamed in honour of party functionaries “with little to no contribution to national development.” He claimed the current decision was not only appropriate but long overdue.
The renaming of Agartala Town Hall was recently announced by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, drawing mixed reactions from across the political spectrum.
