Agartala, 22nd July 2025:  Bishalgarh’s bustling bypass road witnessed simultaneous burglaries at four shops last night leaving local traders shaken and the community deeply concerned. The thefts reportedly committed by a group of miscreants took place near the local court area, where culprits broke through tin-sheet walls at the back of the stores, looting goods and cash.

Business owners, who closed their shops as usual yesterday evening, returned the following morning only to find their establishments had been ransacked. Essential commodities, including groceries and daily-use items, along with cash from the registers, were stolen. The coordinated nature of the break-ins has heightened fears among residents, with traders expressing vulnerability in the face of recurring thefts.

Locals attribute the rise in such crimes to a growing drug crisis in the region. According to residents, addicted individuals primarily youths are increasingly turning to theft to fund their dependency. The situation has escalated to dangerous levels, with some citizens fearing for their lives if they confront these criminals.

Alarmingly, the trend has begun to involve women as well, with reports alleging the involvement of some female relatives of local restaurant owners and cloth merchants in the sale of narcotics. Youth addiction to substances such as brown sugar is said to be spreading rapidly, pushing many away from education and employment.

Intellectuals and social activists have strongly appealed to Tripura’s Chief Minister, Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who also heads the Home Department, urging immediate action to dismantle the drug trade. They warn that failure to curb narcotic abuse could plunge the state’s youth into irreversible darkness.
