Agartala, 2nd August 2025: A devastating fire late last night left three families homeless in the Chawmanu area after a suspected gas cylinder explosion triggered widespread flames. According to eyewitness accounts, the blaze erupted around 12:30 AM razing the adjoining homes of Mandakini Chakma, Darshanjoy Tripura and Metan Joy Tripura.
Of the three, only Mandakini Chakma and her family were present at the time of the incident. “We had finished dinner and gone to sleep. Suddenly, I woke to loud commotion and saw flames spreading rapidly,” Chakma recalled.
Neighbours alerted the fire department, but before firefighters could reach the scene, the fire intensified following the cylinder blast. Despite urgent efforts by the fire service, none of the families were able to salvage any belongings. Estimated property damage ranges from Rs 7 to Rs 8 lakh.
Early this morning, local MLA Shambhulal Chakma, Chawmanu Block BDO Prasannajit Sarkar and the tehsildar visited the site to assess the damage. “We are committed to extending government support to the affected families,” assured MLA Chakma during the visit.
