Agartala, 13th August 2025: On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, senior and veteran journalists in Tripura voiced strong criticism of the state government for its prolonged inaction over the installation of sculptures honoring freedom fighters.
As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative, the Lalit Kala Academy North East Regional Center Agartala organized a symbolic bike procession today beginning at Nazrul Kalakshetra here. The event featured prominently the sculptures of freedom fighters, which were paraded through the city in a tribute that doubled as a protest.
Among those present were Subal Kumar Dey, editor of Syandan Patrika and Syandan TV along with senior journalists Samiran Roy and Manas Pal. Addressing the media personnel here after the procession, De condemned the government’s two-year delay in installing the statues.
“These sculptures were created to honor the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, especially the Bengali community, which played a pivotal role in the independence movement. Artists have poured their labor into these works, yet the government has failed to show the respect these heroes deserve,” Dey said.
Dey further criticized the absence of any visible initiative from the authorities to install the statues in time for Independence Day. “It’s shameful to see these statues left neglected. The government must act immediately,” he urged.
He called upon Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumdar to intervene. “There is no justification for this delay. These great men deserve proper recognition, and the government must fulfill its duty.”
The journalists’ appeal adds pressure on the administration to address the issue before the national celebration, emphasizing that honoring the legacy of freedom fighters is not just ceremonial—but a matter of accountability and respect.
