Surjya Sen Para residents decry decades of neglect, demand basic amenities

Agartala, 18th August 2025:    Nearly eight decades after India’s independence, residents of Surjya Sen Para under Pratapgarh assembly constituency continue to live without access to basic amenities such as drinking water, electricity and proper roads.

Locals alleged that despite repeated promises from political leaders, the village remains untouched by development. The skeletal road infrastructure, though marked on government records, is virtually unusable. Electricity is absent, forcing families to rely on candles and kerosene lamps after sunset. Clean drinking water remains a distant dream.

Residents expressed their frustration to the media, accusing elected representatives of visiting only during elections to solicit votes, offering hollow assurances of development. “Let the Chief Minister stay here for a day,” one resident said angrily, “then he’ll know whether our bodies are made of rhinoceros hide.”

They further claimed that local leaders prioritize personal gain, building homes for themselves while ignoring the community’s needs. Despite being part of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, the village continues to suffer. The villagers have now appealed directly to the state government, urging immediate intervention to address their long-standing grievances and ensure access to essential services.
