Agartala, 18th September 2026 : Police have detained three Bangladeshi women allegedly staying in India without valid travel documents and an Indian man suspected of facilitating their movement towards Guwahati, following a tip-off near Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport on Thursday.
Airport Police Station OC Shyamal Debnath said the police received confidential information at around 3.30 pm on September 17 about the presence of suspected Bangladeshi nationals in the airport area. A police team was immediately sent to the location, where four persons—three women and a man—were found and detained.
During questioning, the three women reportedly disclosed that they were Bangladeshi nationals from Khulna district. Police said preliminary investigation indicated that they had entered India through the Sonamura border and did not possess any valid documents permitting their entry into or stay in the country.
The man was identified as Sirajul Islam, a resident of Kaityaphala under Jatrapur Police Station. According to the OC, Islam allegedly acted as a facilitator and was taking the three women towards Guwahati.
Police said the women had reportedly entered India in search of employment. However, their precise objective and whether they intended to travel to another destination from Guwahati are yet to be established.
No Indian passport, identity card or other Indian documents were recovered from the three women, Debnath said.
A case has been registered and the four detainees are being produced before the Magistrate’s Court. Police have sought five days’ remand of Sirajul Islam to facilitate further interrogation.
The OC said investigators are examining whether other individuals were involved in bringing or facilitating the movement of the women. The possibility of a wider trafficking network has not been established, and further details are expected to emerge during the investigation and interrogation.
