Agartala, 31st October 2025: In one of the largest recent crackdowns on tax evasion, the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Guwahati Zonal Unit, has arrested Mukesh Agarwal (46), a key figure allegedly involved in a massive Rs 83 crore GST fraud. Agarwal, proprietor of M/s Balaji Concast and M/s Balaji Steel Rolling Mills, was arrested on October 16 and later denied bail by a special court in Guwahati.
Official sources informed that Agarwal and his associate, Tripura-based hotelier Gour Saha are accused of manufacturing and supplying MS ingots and TMT bars without issuing GST invoices. This deliberate omission enabled them to evade taxes amounting to Rs 83 crore, constituting a serious violation of Section 16 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act, 2017, which mandates proper documentation and invoicing for claiming input tax credit.
While Agarwal is now in custody, Gour Saha remains absconding. Investigators believe he played a significant role in the operation and may attempt to derail the case if not apprehended soon. The GST Intelligence team has sought assistance from Tripura’s police administration to locate and arrest him.
Sources suggest that the duo operated this fraudulent scheme for over three years, siphoning off crores through systematic tax evasion. Allegations have also surfaced hinting at possible political patronage shielding the accused, raising concerns about the integrity of the investigation.
It is important to note that Saha’s hotel business is not directly linked to the GST fraud case. However, his involvement as a business partner in the steel and ingot supply chain places him at the center of the controversy.
As authorities tighten the legal net, all eyes are on whether the law will prevail or if political influence will allow the accused to escape accountability.
