Agartala, 12th November 2025 : Tripura has successfully completed the delineation of its administrative boundaries using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, officials confirmed this week. The project was a collaborative effort between the Department of Rural Development and the Tripura Space Application Centre (TSAC), aimed at streamlining governance and development planning across the state.
Dr. Sujit Das, a senior official at TSAC, and the Chief Architect of the Rural Development Department jointly announced the completion of the mapping initiative, which began in 2021 following a directive from the state’s Chief Secretary. The need for accurate boundary demarcation became evident due to inconsistencies between resource allocation under schemes like MGNREGA and existing panchayat boundaries, as well as complications in implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and World Bank-funded development programs.
The project was executed in two phases. In the first phase, technical assistants, Gram Rojgar Sevaks (GRS), and panchayat secretaries conducted ground-level data collection using GPS devices, traversing remote areas to trace village boundaries. The second phase involved processing the collected data using high-resolution satellite imagery to generate precise boundary maps. Dr. Das and his project team led this technical effort, utilizing satellite images so detailed that even vehicle counts on roads were discernible.
Draft boundary maps for village panchayats and village committees were verified at the block level by Block Development Officers, followed by necessary revisions. Final boundaries for all 1,176 village panchayats and committees were then notified. The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala certified the accuracy of these boundaries after rigorous quality checks.
Subsequent meetings with various departments helped finalize block, subdivision, and district-level boundaries. A comprehensive report based on the administrative boundary mapping is currently under review by relevant departments, and the state government is expected to issue an official notification soon.
Officials emphasized that the use of GIS technology has revolutionized boundary management in Tripura. With digital maps now available, measuring administrative areas and planning development initiatives has become significantly easier. Dr. Das noted that the project will accelerate administrative efficiency and enhance research and planning capabilities across the state.
