Agartala, 25th December 2025 : The Bru Sangrangma Motha social organization’s central committee held a press conference today at the residence of Niranjan Reang in Birchandra Manu, Santirbazar subdivision, demanding that the state government reconsider its decision and officially declare a full holiday for the annual Sangrangma festival of the Reang community.
The Reangs, the second-largest tribal group in the state, are predominantly Hindu. Every year, on the new moon day of the month of Bhadra, they worship Goddess Sangrangma and organize a community fair at Dakkhol Singh Reang Para in Birchandra Manu. The festival is seen as a symbol of harmony and unity among the community.
This year, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha attended the festival as the chief guest and inaugurator. For months, the Reang community had been appealing to the government and the Chief Minister to declare an official holiday on the occasion. According to General Secretary Khonarom Reang, the Chief Minister had agreed in principle and even expressed his support publicly during the festival in front of thousands of devotees.
However, instead of a full holiday, the government announced only a restricted holiday, which has sparked disappointment among the community. “The Chief Minister kept his word, but the government has not yet declared a full holiday,” Khonarom Reang said at the press conference. The committee urged the Chief Minister and the government to reconsider the matter and issue an official notification for a full holiday.
The Reang community expressed hope that the welfare-oriented state government will review the demand and announce a full holiday in the coming days.
