Agartala, 4th January 2026:    Tripura Crime Branch police today afternoon brought Utpal Chowdhury, nephew of a local political leader, from Haryana to the state. Chowdhury is accused of a massive scam related to the Mid-Day Meal supply contract. According to sources, Utpal Chowdhury allegedly embezzled around Rs 2.5 crore under the pretext of managing the Mid-Day Meal funds.

The fraud has reportedly affected the entire state’s Mid-Day Meal program. Following a complaint, the Arundhati Nagar police filed a case and the Crime Branch subsequently arrested him from Haryana. Sources say that Chowdhury had been hiding outside the state for several days. Initially, the police raided his in-laws’ residence but could not trace him. Using mobile location tracking, the authorities confirmed that he was not in Tripura.

Advanced technological methods later revealed that he was in Haryana, along with a team reportedly assisting him. It is also alleged that a departmental official is involved in the network. Chowdhury was brought to the state via MBB airport but was not presented before the media. A police officer stated that Chowdhury is accused of embezzling large sums of money. When questioned, the accused refused to comment and got into the police vehicle. The next step for the Tripura Crime Branch will be to interrogate him and determine whether he can provide information to trace and apprehend other accused involved in the scam.
