Agartala, 14th January 2026:   Amid the fast-changing tide of modernity, Tripura’s age-old folk culture and religious traditions continue to endure. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, a glimpse of this heritage was seen at Indranagar Kali Tila in Agartala, where residents once again celebrated the festival with the customary Hari Naam Sankirtan and Hari Loot.

According to local sources, the practice of Hari Loot during Makar Sankranti has been prevalent in rural Bengal and Tripura for centuries. Groups of devotees, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of dhak, khol, and kansar, move from house to house chanting the name of Lord Hari. Household members, in turn, offer rice, traditional sweets (pithe), fruits, coconuts, and other food items. These collected offerings are later distributed as prasad among all participants.

Community members emphasize that Hari Loot is not merely a religious ritual but a symbol of social harmony, brotherhood, and mutual cooperation. People of all ages children, youth and elders take part spontaneously, filling the neighborhood with the sound of devotional songs and festive cheer.

However, locals also acknowledge that such folk traditions are under pressure from modern lifestyles, technology-driven culture, and urban busyness. Yet, thanks to the dedication of culture enthusiasts and conscious residents, these ancient practices continue to survive, albeit with difficulty.

The sight of Hari Loot at Indranagar Kali Tila on Makar Sankranti served as a reminder that no matter how strong the forces of modernity, collective faith and community effort can keep traditions alive.
