Agartala, 11th February 2026: A major milestone for grassroots democracy in Tripura was achieved on Wednesday, as the Supreme Court of India directed the Tripura State Election Commission to conduct long-pending Village Committee (VC) elections alongside the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) polls.
Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party, hailed the apex court’s order as a “significant turning point” for local self-governance in tribal areas. He pointed out that this development ends nearly a decade of delays, with the last VC elections having been held more than ten years ago.
The Tipra Motha Party had approached the Supreme Court in October 2025 after the VC elections were repeatedly stalled. Debbarma noted that the state government and election authorities are now bound to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive, after allegedly resisting similar orders in the Tripura High Court.
Addressing party supporters, Debbarma called the ruling “a huge victory for us and for the democratic rights of the Tiprasa people.” He emphasized that the directive mandates the State Election Commission to schedule the Village Committee polls in coordination with the TTAADC elections, restoring village-level governance that has been in limbo for years.
The delay in holding Village Committee elections, crucial for administration in Sixth Schedule areas, had long fueled frustration and unrest among tribal communities, making the Supreme Court’s intervention a landmark moment for democratic empowerment in the region.
