Agartala, 19th February 2026:   In a remarkable display of medical expertise and swift coordination, doctors at Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital successfully saved the life of a two-year-old girl by removing a safety pin from her stomach using advanced endoscopic technology.

The child, daughter of Samrat Sarkar from Khas Chouhmuhani area of Melaghar in Sepahijala District, was rushed to Melaghar Hospital on February 16, 2026, at around 12:50 PM in critical condition after accidentally swallowing a safety pin. Considering the seriousness of her condition, doctors immediately referred her to Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital for advanced treatment.

Upon arrival at GBP Hospital, the child was admitted under the supervision of specialist doctors from the ENT Department. An X-ray examination confirmed the presence of a safety pin inside her stomach. Initially, she was shifted to the Female Surgical Ward, and preparations were made to remove the object through surgery.

However, after detailed discussions between the Surgical and Gastroenterology Departments, the medical team decided to opt for a less invasive and more advanced procedure — endoscopic removal — instead of conventional surgery.

On February 17, 2026, Dr. Shubhadeep Pal, Specialist in the Department of Gastroenterology, successfully removed the safety pin using the state-of-the-art CV-190 endoscopy machine. The procedure was carried out with precision and care, avoiding the need for open surgery.

Following the successful removal, the child was shifted back to the Female Surgical Ward for observation. As her condition remained stable and satisfactory, she was discharged on the same day.

The endoscopy team was led by Dr. Shubhadeep Pal, with support from OT nurses Gopa Dey and Aparna Das, OT technician Suman Kumar Shil, and other healthcare staff. The surgical team also included Dr. Maniranjan Debbarma, Dr. Sunil Kumar Ghosh, Dr. Sujit Chakma, Dr. Tamal Sarkar, Dr. Antara Ray Bhowmik, and Dr. Mehedi Hasan.

Notably, the entire treatment was provided completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
