Agartala, 20th February 2026:  Pradesh Congress on Friday organised a protest outside the Tripura Pradesh Congress office, accusing the ruling dispensation of attempting to impose Hindi and weaken regional languages.

Speaking to reporters, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said the country was going through a challenging phase marked by economic and employment crises. He held Mohan Bhagwat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah accountable for what he described as the prevailing situation.

Chakraborty alleged that the recent visit of the Union Home Minister to the state was part of a broader agenda related to language policy. According to him, there were attempts to project Hindi as a national language, a move he termed unconstitutional and unacceptable.

He further claimed that recent remarks by the RSS chief on issues such as infiltration and language-based identification were linked to a larger strategy. He criticised any initiative that seeks to give precedence to Hindi over other constitutionally recognised languages.

“India’s Constitution recognises 22 official languages, and Hindi is one among them. Any effort to elevate one language above others violates the spirit of the Constitution,” Chakraborty said.

The protest was held on the eve of International Mother Language Day, a timing the party said made the alleged push for Hindi particularly concerning.

The Congress also accused the state government of neglecting Bengali and Kokborok, the latter widely spoken among Tripura’s indigenous communities. Party leaders asserted that they would continue to resist any move they believe undermines or disrespects regional languages.
