Agartala, 28th February 2026: The state government has taken several special steps to accelerate the growth of flower production, as since the financial year 2018-19, there has been a significant increase in flower demand over the last seven years and farmers are getting remunerative prices for these flowers in the local market.
This was informed by Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath after inaugurating the Centre of Floriculture and Landscaping at Gakulpur in Udaipur under Gomati District.
The Minister said that India is in the second position in terms of flower cultivation. China was first in paddy cultivation, while now India is number one.
“Majority benefits are with flower cultivation. But we cannot cultivate flowers everywhere. The highest income is in flowers. Earlier, people here in Bishalgarh were engaged in vegetables, but now they are cultivating flowers. Our present government wants people to become self-reliant and provide house-to-house employment. From flowers, we can also produce color for Holi, medicine, and perfume. The demand for flowers is high,” he said.
The Agriculture Minister informed that Tripura’s fertile soil, adequate rainfall, and subtropical climate offer immense potential for growing a variety of flowers. The state has high potential for the commercialization of floriculture. Traditional flowers like Marigold, Gladiolus, and Rose are the pioneers in the conventional floriculture market.
“Moreover, Tripura has also entered the list of high-tech floriculture states. Anthurium, Orchid, and Gerbera have been successfully grown on farmers’ land under conservation status. The effectiveness of these projects is also encouraging. Each farmer is getting an average profit of more than Rs 10,000 per month from a project of 200 square meters. The demand for these flowers is always good in the local market, and farmers are getting profitable prices by selling the flowers they produce themselves. Since the financial year 2018-19, the area under local flowers has increased by 60% for Marigold, Gladiolus, and Rose, and the total AOR of local flowers has increased by 332% in the last seven years. The area under high-tech floriculture has increased by 124%,” said the Minister.

“The state government has taken several special steps to accelerate the growth of flower production. Some of the notable steps are: a 400 Sq.Mt arcadium and a 400 Sq.Mt hardening center have been built in Badharghat Garden. In addition, special initiatives have been taken to cultivate high-quality flowers in empty fields. As a result, it will be very helpful to maintain quality as per demand and supply flowers to the enthusiastic farmers at low prices on time,” he said.
The Minister informed that this park will be known as the CENTRE OF FLORICULTURE AND LANDSCAPING from today. A total of Rs 4.50 crore has been spent on the construction of this park with the help of the Public Works Department.
“In addition, a Center of Excellence on Flowers is being developed in Lembuchara on about 65 kani of land under the joint initiative of the Central and State Governments. Initiatives will be taken to cultivate various species of orchids, anthurium, gerbera, rose, chrysanthemum, and various types of leafy plants in this garden. This project is for flower lovers. In addition to providing high-quality flower seedlings at a low price as per demand, there will also be training facilities. Hopefully, in the coming days, this center will be able to take the state of Tripura to a specific target level in flower production,” he said.
