Agartala, 23rd April 2026: In a shining display of compassion, Bishramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajit Debbarma extended vital support to a struggling family in Subhash Nagar, Ward No. 11 of Melaghar Municipality.
The family’s daughter, Sumitra Dutta, a college student at Udaipur College pursuing an honors degree in Education, has been facing severe financial hardship following her father’s illness. Two months ago, her father, Swapan Dutta, a construction worker’s assistant, suffered a cardiac arrest that left part of his body paralyzed. With the family’s only source of income gone, they have often been forced to go without food.
On Thursday afternoon, after completing his duties at the station, OC Debbarma personally visited the family’s residence. Although Sumitra was away at college, he met with her bedridden father and mother, Kajal Dutta, to understand their situation.
Moved by their plight, the officer provided one month’s worth of essential food supplies—including rice, oil, salt, biscuits, potatoes, soybeans, puffed rice, soap, and onions. He also handed over funds to cover Sumitra’s transportation expenses for an entire year, ensuring she could continue her studies without interruption.
Speaking to the media, OC Debbarma said, “After reading about their condition, I could not hold myself back. It is my moral responsibility to stand by them. If the girl wishes to pursue university education in the future, I will extend my support for that as well.”
Residents of Melaghar have widely praised his initiative, calling it a living example of the saying “man is for man.” Notably, OC Debbarma has previously assisted several secondary and higher secondary students in similar ways, earning admiration for his consistent humanitarian efforts.
