Mystery Deepens Over Death of BJP Leader Rahul Kishore Roy in Dharmanagar

Date:

Agartala, 5th May 2026:   Tension gripped Dharmanagar following the mysterious death of BJP leader and councillor Rahul Kishore Roy, raising serious concerns about law and order in the region.

Rahul Kishore Roy, a councillor of Ward No. 5 under Dharmanagar Municipal Council and Mandal President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, was found hanging in the bathroom of his residence shortly after the by-election results were announced on Monday. A saffron scarf was reportedly found tied around his neck.

The incident has triggered widespread speculation and unrest among locals, with the victim’s family alleging foul play. According to family members, Roy had been under immense pressure following the BJP’s electoral victory in the area.

Speaking to the media, Roy’s mother claimed that her son had feared a possible attack on their home after the election results. She recounted that a group of alleged miscreants visited their house twice on Monday—once in the afternoon and again at night.

She alleged that the individuals demanded that Roy be handed over to them and verbally abused him using obscene language. At one point, they reportedly persuaded her to open the gate under the pretext of paying respect, only to insult her son afterward. Roy’s mother said she pleaded for her son’s safety before the group left.

Later that night, the family alleged that the same group returned and hurled bombs at their residence. Shortly afterward, Roy’s hanging body was discovered inside the house.

The incident has sparked outrage in the locality, with residents and BJP workers alleging that Roy was either murdered or driven to suicide through sustained mental harassment. Roy’s mother named several individuals—identified as Bablu, Nayan (Nonn), Hirak, Pablu, and Bablu Purkayastha—as those allegedly involved in threatening her son.

Police from Dharmanagar Police Station reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation has been initiated, but no arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.

Protests erupted in the area, with locals and BJP supporters staging a road blockade from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Tuesday, demanding immediate arrest of the accused. They also insisted on the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee at the site.

Senior BJP leader Kajal Das was present at the protest site. Despite the deployment of additional security forces, authorities struggled to bring the situation under control, as demonstrators continued their agitation with the body at the blockade site.

Political tensions in Dharmanagar have reportedly escalated since the demise of local MLA Bishwabandhu Sen, leading to factional clashes within the party. Sources suggest that Roy had also been a contender for the party ticket in the by-election, which was eventually given to another candidate as per party high command’s decision.

Following the announcement of the election results on Monday, reports indicate that members of one faction allegedly began exerting pressure and issuing threats against the rival faction, with Roy becoming one of the victims.

The absence of the newly elected MLA at Roy’s residence and the protest site until Tuesday afternoon further intensified public anger.

Roy is survived by his pregnant wife, and his untimely death has left his family and the local community in deep shock.
