Agartala, 6th June 2026: Congress MLA Birajit Sinha on Saturday levelled serious allegations of large-scale corruption within the Kailashahar Forest Department, claiming that financial irregularities involving crores of rupees have taken place under the department’s watch. The allegations were raised during a press conference organized by the Unakoti District Congress at the Kailashahar Congress Bhavan.
The press conference was attended by Unakoti District Congress President Mohammad Badruzzaman, senior Congress leader Rudrendu Bhattacharya, and several party workers and supporters.
Addressing the media, Birajit Sinha alleged that the Sub-Divisional Forest Officer (SDFO) of Kailashahar recently awarded contracts worth nearly ₹1 crore to selected contractors through offline tenders, bypassing established government procurement norms. According to the MLA, the tender process was conducted in violation of prescribed rules and lacked transparency.
He informed that after the alleged irregularities came to light, Congress worker Birachandra Sinha submitted a written complaint to the District Forest Officer and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. The complaint reportedly seeks cancellation of the disputed supply orders and calls for an impartial inquiry into the actions of the SDFO.
Raising further concerns, the Congress MLA alleged that illegal soil extraction from the Manu River has been continuing for a long period in different parts of Kailashahar without effective intervention from the Forest Department. He also claimed that several timber-based businesses and furniture shops in the northern part of the town are operating using valuable forest timber, yet authorities have failed to take adequate action.
“The allegations deserve a fair and transparent investigation to ensure proper utilization of public funds and protection of forest resources,” Sinha said, expressing hope that the concerned authorities would act promptly.
