Agartala, 11th June 2026: The two-day Bhishmadev Memorial Children’s Drama Competition for West Tripura district commenced at Muktadhara Auditorium on Thursday with the participation of young theatre artists. The event has been organized by the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs in association with the Education Department.
The competition was inaugurated by Paschim Tripura Zilla Parishad Acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil and Agartala Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Monika Das Datta. Addressing the gathering, Biswajit Shil highlighted the importance of cultural activities in the overall development of children. He said that along with academics, participation in cultural practices helps children develop creativity and confidence. He also stressed that theatre from an early age can help build a progressive mindset free from superstition.
Paying tribute to renowned theatre personality Bhishmadev Bhattacharya, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Datta said that his contribution to the cultural movement of the state and promotion of children’s theatre would always be remembered. She added that the competition was organized to preserve and continue his legacy.
Social worker Asim Bhattacharya and theatre personality Haradhan Datta also shared their views at the inaugural programme. Additional District Magistrate of West Tripura Arup Deb attended the event, while Director of the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs Bimbisar Bhattacharya delivered the welcome address. West District Education Officer Kalyan Bhadra proposed the vote of thanks.
The inaugural programme featured a performance by artists of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The competition began with the staging of the play “Save Trees and Protect Nature.” On the first day, seven theatre groups presented their performances, showcasing the creativity and talent of young participants.
