TCW team visits elderly woman abused by son, Chairperson warns against neglect of parents

Date:

Agartala, 15th June 2026:   Following media reports highlighting the alleged abuse of an elderly mother by her son, a delegation led by the Chairperson of the Tripura State Commission for Women, Jharna Debbarma, visited the residence of Ranu Bala Sarkar at Sekerkot on Monday afternoon.

Ranu Bala Sarkar, a resident of the area near the sub-centre adjacent to Netaji Subhash Colony under Amtali Police Station, had reportedly been assaulted by her younger son, Bachchu Sarkar, on Saturday. After approaching the media on Sunday and sharing her ordeal, the matter came to public attention.

Taking cognizance of the report, the State Commission for Women delegation reached her home and held discussions with both Ranu Bala Sarkar and her son. The team listened to their respective statements and tried to understand the circumstances behind the incident.

During the interaction, Bachchu Sarkar admitted that he had acted in anger due to mental stress and expressed regret over his behaviour. He also apologized for his actions.

Meanwhile, further allegations surfaced regarding the elderly woman’s family situation. It was claimed that her elder son, Badal Sarkar, who reportedly holds a senior position at BSNL and resides in Pratapgarh, Agartala, had taken control of the ancestral property when the opportunity arose. It was alleged that he currently does not take responsibility for his elderly mother’s care or regularly inquire about her well-being.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Jharna Debbarma expressed strong concern over incidents where elderly parents face neglect and mistreatment from their own children.

“Such ungrateful sons must face the consequences of their actions. As long as such children exist in society, parents will continue to suffer neglect,” she said.

She further stated that children who forget their responsibilities towards the parents who raised them with love and care bring shame to society. The Chairperson added that the State Commission for Women would never tolerate any form of abuse against a mother by the child she gave birth to.

The Commission’s visit has brought renewed attention to the issue of elderly care, family responsibility, and the need to protect senior citizens from neglect and abuse.
